CBN inserts in 12 grades for 5 different material groups

You have 12 different CBN grades available in the CBN catalog for different tasks such as smooth and interrupted cutting. To get more information about the respective CBN grade, click on one of the buttons.

What is CBN?

CBN stands for cubic boron nitride and is a synthetic cutting material that is the second hardest known material after diamond. CBN is specially developed for cutting extremely hard and wear-resistant materials. Due to its high hardness and temperature resistance, CBN is ideal for machining materials that cannot be machined efficiently with conventional cutting materials such as carbide.

CBN tools, including indexable inserts, are either made entirely of cubic boron nitride or are coated with it. They are primarily used in high-performance machining processes where precision and long tool life are required.

The CBN grade H was specially developed for the machining of:

  • Hardened steels up to a hardness of 72HRC
  • Hardened sintered steel
  • Clear chilled cast iron

The CBN grade X was specially developed for the machining of:

  • Hardened tool steel up to 72 HRC
  • Special alloys like ASP, CPM, HARDOX
  • Stellite
  • Carbide >20%Co

The CBN grade K was specially developed for the high-speed machining of:

  • Grey cast iron
  • Ductile cast iron

The CBN grade P was specially developed for the machining of:

  • Sintered steel

The CBN grade S was specially developed for the machining of:

  • Inconel
  • Ni-, Co-, Fe- and Cr-alloys
  • Titanium alloys

What are the advantages over other tools?

CBN indexable inserts offer several decisive advantages over conventional cutting materials such as carbide, ceramic or HSS:

  1. Outstanding wear resistance: CBN is extremely resistant to abrasive wear, which leads to significantly longer tool life, especially when machining hard materials such as hardened steel or cast iron.
  2. High temperature resistance: CBN can withstand very high temperatures of up to 1200°C without losing hardness, making it ideal for high-performance applications at high cutting speeds.
  3. Longer tool life: Thanks to the combination of hardness and temperature resistance, CBN indexable inserts last significantly longer than conventional tools, which increases productivity and reduces tool change costs.
  4. Precise machining: CBN enables precise machining of hard materials with low tolerances and excellent surface quality.
  5. High cutting speeds: Thanks to the hardness and temperature resistance of CBN, workpieces can be machined at significantly higher cutting speeds, which considerably reduces machining time.
